What can I expect after surgery?
  • Expect some pain in the operated area after surgery.  Use the prescribed pain medication as needed.
  • If you experience a marked increase in unsteadiness, or dizziness, you should contact the office.
  • If you must sneeze, sneeze with the mouth open. Do not close the mouth and sneeze or pinch your nose and stifle the sneeze, as this may "blow" the patch off the eardrum.
  • Take any prescribed antibiotic given to you until it is entirely gone.
  • There may be some soiling of the bandage.  Contact the office or go to the nearest Emergency Department if the head dressing is soaked and dampens the outside.
  • The head dressing and eye pad or gauze can be removed as instructed by Dr. Tietze in 1 to 2 days.  Change the cotton ball in your ear daily. Put antibiotic ointment on the cotton ball to make a good water proof seal. Keep the operated ear dry.  Dissolvable packing is placed in the ear and remains until your post operative office visit (usually 4 to 6 weeks after surgery).  Any scalp incision can be washed after 5 days with removal of the steri-strip tape as needed.
  • The ear will feel plugged for up to 4 - 6 weeks after surgery until all the packing has dissolved. An audiogram is usually arranged after the first office visit (4 to 6 weeks after surgery).
  • Do not partake in strenuous activity or swimming until your first postoperative visit and only if Dr. Tietze has stated that you may safely do so.
